Andhra Special ~ Mamidikaya Pappu / Raw Mango Dal



Cooked with lentils raw mango has a great taste. This dal tastes wonderful with rice or rotis. Being Tangy and twisty in nature this dal is one of the very favorites of Andhra cuisine; Mamidikaya Pappu..



Ingredients :
- Chopped Raw Mango pieces - 1 1/4 cup
- Toor Dal - 1 cup
- Moong Dal - 1 tbsp
- Channa Dal - 1 tbsp
- Chopped Onions - 1 cup
- Chopped Tomatoes - 1 cup
- Tamarind - small lemon sized ball
- Turmeric - 1 tsp
- Chilli Powder - 1 1/2 tsp
- Dhaniya Powder - 1 tsp
- Jeera Powder - 1 tsp
- Salt - as required
- Garlic - 3-4 pods
- Green Chillies - 3-4
- Water

For Tempering
- Jeera - 1 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Urad dal - 1 tsp
- Channa dal - 1 tsp
- Dry red chillies - 4-5
- Hing - 1 tsp
- Ghee - 1 tbsp
- Oil - 1 tbsp
- Curry leaves 


Recipe :

1. In a pressure cooker, add raw mango chunks, toor dal, channa dal, moong dal, pinch of turmeric, tamarind and add water such that the dal and mango pieces submerge. Pressure cook this for 3 whistles to make soft dal.
2. Mash the dal along with mango pieces and keep aside.
3. In a sauce pan, heat ghee and oil. Add the tempering ingredients and let them splutter.
4. Add chopped onions and green chillies. Fry till the onions become translucent.
5. Add chopped tomatoes, salt and turmeric and cook till this gravy is completely done.
6. You can add the mashed dal with mago pieces to the gravy. Mix and add the chilli, dhaniya & jeera powders. Cook for 5-10 mins.
Check for the spices and add water if required to adjust the consistency. 
Serve with rice and ghee or rotis.
